Scotrenewables SR2000 tidal turbine generates over 18MWh of energy within a 24-hour testing period

After reaching its full-rated capacity of 2MW in April 2017, Scotrenewables SR2000 tidal turbine clocked over 18MWh of tidal power generation in 24 hours. The turbine is installed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), a tidal test site in Orkney, Scotland. 

Engineered and built with a 16-meter rotor diameter for each of its 1MW turbines, the SR2000 is part of the FloTEC project, financed by Horizon 2020 European funding. 

FloTEC project undergoes a grid-connected testing program focused on demonstrating power and hydrodynamic performance of tidal turbines, as well as low cost maintenance and vessel strategy development.

With a grant of €10 million awarded  by the European Commission’s research and innovation programme (Horizon 2020) in 2016 , the Floating Tidal Energy Commercialization (FloTEC) project aims at testing advanced standard power conversion technology as already used in the offshore wind sector as well as in more economical manufacturing and integrated storage. 

Project goals also including tidal turbine improvements with potential increase of turbine diameters to 20 meters, boosting the annual yield from turbines by over 50%.
