Ocean Energy Europe declares that 337GW of ocean energy capacity could be deployed around the world by 2050

Ocean Energy Europe (OEE) is the largest network of ocean energy professionals in the world, counting with 115 organisations. OEE’s mission is to represent the interests of Europe’s ocean energy sector.

If estimates are true, global ocean energy market could generate €653 bn in investments and cover 10% of EU electricity demand by 2050, assuming that 100GW of wave and tidal capacity can produce around 350 TWh of electricity a year.

2016 was an important year for ocean energy industry - 21 tidal turbines of over 100kW were deployed in European waters, totalling 13MW, and 20 other turbines are being built, adding up 12MW.

In addition, the first tidal energy farms were deployed in 2016 - in the Shetlands, within the Pentland Firth in Scotland and Paimpol-Bréhat in France. Pentland Firth’s farm, MeyGen is the biggest tidal energy farm to date, featuring four 1.5MW tidal turbines.

One of the reasons for such an exciting year for ocean energy industry is the public support of the European Union and the set-up funds to promote ocean energy research and innovation from many European countries.

In France, EDF developed a tidal energy site off the coast of Britanny, in Paimpol Bréhat. The project total capacity is 1 MW and it counts with 2 turbines provided by DCNS/OpenHydro, each with 0.5MW capacity, and 16m rotor diameter. In early 2016, the turbines were deployed and connected to the grid.

Moreover, French government recently approved the construction of the first pilot tidal farm project in France to be installed in Raz Blanchard, the strongest French current, located in Normandy. You can read more about it here.

Open Ocean’s goal is to provide to your company deep analysis of metocean conditions to help you develop your tidal & wave project. In order to do so, Open Ocean has created Metocean Analytics, a software capable of analyzing terabytes of metocean data, generating statistics and reports personalized to your company’s needs.
