China to Expand its Offshore wind Energy Capacity

The world’s biggest dam operator, China Three Gorges Corp. has ventured into offshore wind energy industry by bagging a $2.3 billion deal to design two offshore wind farms.

The facilities include a 600MW offshore wind farm off the coast of Putian in China’s eastern coastal province Fujian and a 300MW unit in Hebei region.

Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research Institute Co. has been commissioned to do a feasibility study of Putain wind farm, which would have up to 120 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 5MW.

Alongside, the 300MW  project off the coast of Hebei will be developed by Hebei Construction & Investment New Energy Co.

China has called for local authorities in coastal areas to promote offshore
wind energy, aiming to expand its offshore wind power capacity, which stood at  233.3MW as of July 2015.
